Richard Seals has been performing on drums for more than forty years and composing music for almost thirty. As a graduate of North Carolina Central University with a Bachelors of Arts in Music, emphasis in Jazz Studies, he has played in almost every musical setting imaginable. Along with drums Richard also plays a mallet instrument called a MalletKat. It’s a percussion controller similar to a keyboard controller for percussion mallet players. Although the MalletKat is rarely used for live performances, it’s a valuable tool for composition.
Richard Seals’ drumming style has been described as, "...a fiery display of finesse and emotion, ...an astonishing demonstration of technique tempered by an abundance of ideas and musicianship." He has shared the stage with top performers such as Buck Hill, Stanley Cowell, Gil-Scott Heron, Larry Seals (LSQ), Stanley Turrentine, Ed Wiley Jr. as well as Percy Sledge.
As a part of Richard journey he has performed in a number of theater productions at Arena Stage of Washington, DC as well as Center Stage in Baltimore, MD. Theater productions include “Dinah Was”, “Blues in the Night”, and the award winning “Thunder Knocking on the Door”.
As a way of giving back to the musical community Richard has been involved in many mentor and student programs in the Washington DC area. This includes clinics at local schools such as Duke Ellington School for the Performing Arts. To assist in these endeavors Richard has been a recipient of a 'Grants-In-Aid Fellowship Award' By the D.C. Commission on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. In addition Richard has been teaching drum set in the Washington DC area for more than 20 years.
As a musician and composer Richard Seals tries to offer a unique multidimensional view into jazz, and the art of music.
